Amylin + GLP-1 medicines: what EloraTZP's Phase 2b results mean

Gino Broccolo · Updated 2026-09-30

Lilly's investigational EloraTZP combines the amylin agonist eloralintide with tirzepatide. Phase 2b results reported more weight loss and A1C reduction than tirzepatide 15 mg, with higher discontinuation from adverse events in combination groups.

Quick answer

EloraTZP is a promising investigational amylin + GIP/GLP-1 combination, not an approved treatment. Phase 2b results were strong on weight and A1C, but adverse-event discontinuation was meaningfully higher in combination groups.

What EloraTZP is

EloraTZP combines eloralintide, a selective amylin-receptor agonist, with tirzepatide, a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist. The idea is to target complementary appetite and metabolic pathways.

What Lilly reported

In a 48-week Phase 2b study of 367 adults with obesity or overweight and type 2 diabetes, the highest combination arm reported average weight loss of 23.3% and A1C reduction of 2.9 percentage points. Tirzepatide 15 mg reported 14.8% weight loss and a 2.4-point A1C reduction.

The safety signal matters

Gastrointestinal adverse events were common and treatment discontinuation due to adverse events ranged from 10.8% to 27.0% across combination groups, compared with 2.9% for tirzepatide in the reported dataset.

What it does not prove

These data do not establish long-term safety, durable weight maintenance, cardiovascular benefit, or superiority across populations. The primary comparison was versus placebo; other comparisons were secondary, and the drug remains investigational.

How BOTH handles evidence & testing

Current EloraTZP results are manufacturer-reported Phase 2b data. The trial is randomized, but these results should remain provisional until full peer-reviewed reporting and longer follow-up are available. EloraTZP is investigational and not FDA-approved.
